We are a family of four that lives in small town in eastern Iowa. Spending quality time with our family is very important to us.  What better way to do that than to sit down as a family and play quality board games?  It keeps the entire family engaged and forces some deep thinking for the kids.

These board game reviews will be done with the perspective of encouraging and nurturing that precious family time.

Monster lab card game

Game Overview: Playing as a mad scientist, you will be gathering spare monster parts from the graveyard.  Looking for parts that have the same sizes and DNA, you will combine the parts to create crazy and humorous monsters.  By using the monsters you have created and by also storing monster parts in your storeroom, you are trying to have five monster samples to win the game.  Beware though as players can attack you and play cards directly attacking your lab.  In addition, you always have to watch out for Monster Hunter’s that may be found in the graveyard as you attempt to gather the parts needed to be victorious.  <Full Review>

draconis invasion

Game Overview: A deck building game in which you are protecting the kingdom by gathering an army to battle against an evil that has appeared at your borders.  Each player will battle the multiple invaders of Draconis by obtaining gold that is used to hire mighty warriors to defend the kingdom while avoiding terror cards that get in the way of being victorious.  <Full Review>

Pie Rats of the carob Bean farm

Game Overview: You play as a Pie Rat (Pirate) Captain that is attempting to lure additional rats that will join your crew.  Beware though as other Captains will use their charisma to lure your crew members who are not loyal to you.  Once you have a crew of Pie Rats and if you have enough strength, you can attempt to loot pies from the window sill of the farmer’s wife.  Loot the pies with the most victory points and you will come out victorious.  <Full Review>

Wizard's Academy

Game Overview: Playing as a team in this cooperative game, you are students just starting to learn magic that sometimes works as expected and sometimes creates unexpected havoc.  Each student has a unique ability and you must rely on your knowledge (or lack of) of magic as you attempt to protect the Wizard’s academy from imps, trolls, demons, fires, and floods.  <Full Review>

Brace For Impact

Game Overview: Being released on Kickstarter on March 31, 2017, Brace for Impact is a quick playing dice game where you are a submarine commander and your goal is to either destroy your opponent’s submarine crew or to gather enough intelligence to win.  <Full Review>

Game of Blame

Game Overview: The Game of Blame is a card game where the Queen’s realm is in chaos and you are trying to avoid her wrath by hiding your failures and blaming everyone else.  Have the lowest score at the end of the game and you avoid being banished or executed.  The same can’t be said for the other players.  <Full Review>

The Goonies: Adventure Card Game

Game Overview: Immerse yourself into the classic 1985 movie Goonies, where you will be on a quest to find One Eyed Willy’s treasure in this cooperative card adventure game.  As you get closer to the treasure, you must watch out for One Eyed Willy’s booby traps and stay one step ahead of the Fratelli family who is also out to get the treasure for themselves.  <Full Review>

Game Overview: Playing as a pirate captain, you participate in auctions with the other players as you compete to replenish your crew by seeking out suitable hands from the local tavern.  In this variant on rummy, you are attempting to get a run of crew members based upon their crew rank.  Additionally, there are action cards will come into play that will give you special abilities.  <Full Review>

The Bermuda crisis:Discovery Dawning

Game Overview: On the verge of finally unraveling the Bermuda Triangle mystery, all players make their way to a powerful and secret remote island.  You will race to secure the island’s treasures which include artifacts, magic, and an ancient scroll.  As you gather resources, you will build up different base camps for your team which provide new abilities and provide victory points.  There are multiple ways to win the game, depending on the strategy and path you take along with how the game itself plays out.  <Full Review>

Epic Resort-2nd Edition

Game Overview: As an owner of a resort, you are building vacation attractions while leveraging hired workers to attract tourists to your resort.  However, there are monsters abound and you must also attract heroes that are already on vacation to protect both the resort and the tourists that are there.  The more attractive and epic the resort, the more likely an attack will occur.  To maximize your victory points, you will have to decide between protecting your resort and the tourists or getting the attracted heroes to maximize their health points.  <Full Review>

Entropy

Game Overview: A quick playing card game with simultaneous actions; where five different parallel worlds have collided which forms a connection between all of the worlds.  Playing as one of five characters, you are attempting to return to your world by being the first player to piece together four unique fragments from your reality.  <Full Review>
